Wines From Places You Probably have never been

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

I’m finishing up gathering the last two wines for my class this Tuesday (11/27/2007). The theme I have come up with is one that I have thought about for a long time. The theme is “wines from places you might not have ever been”.

No, it’s not going to be a berry wine from Hawaii or some obscure grape from a third world country. These wines are some of my favorites of all time. I’m even going to be pulling about three bottles of one wine out of my own cellar just so I can have enough to share it with everyone, since I could not find anymore around town.

We will be having a wonderful Rhone style wine that I found on a great deal with the help of another member of class. We were out and about on one of my days off and found this wine.

Another of the wines is something that I found by asking two people at the wine store (store owner and a friend that works there). I said, “If you could recommend one red wine around $20 what would it be?” They both said separately the same wine. I tried it and then bought a case for class.

More to come once I have finished picking up my last wine, which is going to be a white.

  1. 1995 and 1997 Vignobles Biresbarre Vouvray Dem-Sec (UnWined) - $19.99
  2. 1999 Marco Maci’s - Corte Barocca Salento IGT Primitivio (A. Litteri’s) $3.99
  3. 2002 Plan Pegau (Mills Wine) - $9.00
  4. 2005 Paoletti Vineyards - Piccolo Cru (Bell’s) - $19.99
  5. 2002 Rusden Grenache Christines (Wide World of Wines) - $44.99

Cheeses (Rick’s Wine and Gourmet)

  1. Varcherin (Swiss Washed Rhine) - $12.99
  2. Grafton Cheddar (Aged 2 yr) - $10.99

Gewurztraminer

Sorry, this took so long to post, I have been very busy with work and other things. I spent last weekend with about 50 other people building a web application called www.holaneighbor.com. It’s about creating a community in your area. I started one for Washington Wine and Cheese. The applicion is still a little rough around the edges and what doyou except for something that was conceived at 9:00 pm on Friday night and went live at 11:57 pm Sunday nigh going into Monday morning. We also closed upshop each of the two nights from midnight until 9:00 am the next morning. I’m a part owner of this LLC. We’ll see where it goes if anywhere.

Ok, now back to the wines. Two wines are from Calvert-Woodley, and one each from Arrowwine, MacArthur, and finally Rodmans.

  1. 2006 Alexander Valley Vineyards - $10.98
  2. 2005 Cantina Nalles - Alto Adige (Sudtirol) - $15.25
  3. 2006 White Hall Vineyards - Virginia - $18.89
  4. 2005 Domaine Ehrhart Herrenweg (Alsace) - $19.61
  5. 2005 Sakonnet Vineyards - Southern New England - $19.61

The two cheeses are I assume from Calvert-Woodley too.

  1. Emmental - $??.00
  2. Roquefort - $??.00

A Sampling of Portugal and Spain

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Sorry, this has taken so long to get the wine and cheese information out from Tuesday’s class. I never got home until after 11:00 pm and have been out the last two nights after work until late.

Here is the list of great wines presented by our dear friend and all around nice guy Jeff Bryant.

  1. Gazela Vinho Verde - $5.99 - It’s light, fruity, refreshing, great for a graden party and you can’t argue with the price.
  2. 2004 - Montebuena Rioja - $8.99 - Medium red finishes silky and very easy to drink, with no rough edges. A great bargain in Rioja.
  3. 1998 - Montecillo Rioja Gran Reserva - $19.99 - Mature fruit aromas, complex and elegant, with notes of dark fruit, and full-bodied.
  4. 2004 - Quinta Do Vae Meao Meandro - $24.99 - This wine is big and young still needs sometime to age.  Someone at the table even said it reminded them of beef jerky.
  5. 1997 - Osborne vintagePort - $29.99 - Great port for the money and I’m not sure if you could lay this down until your really old, but a good number of years would be great.

The two cheese that we had were:

  1. English Stilton Blue Cheese - $12.99
  2. Manchego - $12.99 -  sheep’s milk cheese made in the La Mancha region of Spain.

All the wine came from our good friend Mike Fraiser at Total Wine and More. The cheese and bread both came from Calvert Woodley’s.
