Gewurztraminer

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Sorry, this took so long to post, I have been very busy with work and other things. I spent last weekend with about 50 other people building a web application called www.holaneighbor.com. It’s about creating a community in your area. I started one for Washington Wine and Cheese. The applicion is still a little rough around the edges and what doyou except for something that was conceived at 9:00 pm on Friday night and went live at 11:57 pm Sunday nigh going into Monday morning. We also closed upshop each of the two nights from midnight until 9:00 am the next morning. I’m a part owner of this LLC. We’ll see where it goes if anywhere.

Ok, now back to the wines. Two wines are from Calvert-Woodley, and one each from Arrowwine, MacArthur, and finally Rodmans.

Malbecs!

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

An all-Malbec tasting at WWCS. These are five of the best Malbecs from Chile and Argentina, carefully selected by Jean and by Dottie and John from the Wall Street Journal. Seriously–we’re going to enjoy the wines that the Wall Street Journal, in their Malbec review in June, called the “Best of Tasting” and “Best Value”. In addition, there are three other wonderful Malbecs that were the best of the many that I tried over the summer in preparation for this class.

1. 2005 Nieto Senetiner - Medonza, Argentina - $10.00

2. 2006 Alamos Catena - Mendoza, Argentina - $12.00

3. 2006 Montes - Colchuga Valley, Chile - $14.00

4. 2005 Felpe Rutini - Argentina - $20.00

5. 2004 Zuccardi - Mendoza, Argentina - $23.00

Cheeses:

  1. Provolone - $11.99
  2. St. Andre - $13.99

Two Blondes, a Brunette, and Five Big Bodacious Reds Redux

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

bo·da·cious (adj.) : remarkable; outstanding.

October 2nd, bring the the return of Two Blondes, A Brunette and Five Reds presented by Lori Draheim, Carol Rentz and Jill LaPanna. Our theme for this tasting is Big
Bodacious Blends Part II. This is a continuation of Part I which was a big hit…and these wines promise to be even more bodacious! I know; I tasted them all.

The wines to be featured are red blends made up of three or more grape varietals. Needless to say extensive “research” has gone into the selection of these wines. We will start with a serious Rhone Ranger blend from Santa Cruz, then enjoy a Chateauneuf du Pape with outstanding character, next we will taste a haunting, fruit forward
blend from California followed by a bright, focused GSM from Australia, our final wine is a complex blend that will evolve beautifully once set free from the confines of the bottle!

  1. 2001 Le Cigare Volant (California) - $39.99
  2. 2003 Pierre Usseglio & Fils Chateaneuf do Pape (France) - $29.99
  3. 2004 Phantom Bogle (California) - $14.99
  4. 2003 Rosemount GSM (Australia) - $33.99
  5. 2005 Orin Swift - The Prisoner (Napa, California) - $32.99

Cheeses

  1. Ariana Goat Gouda - $14.99
  2. Monteboissie Morbiere - $9.99

Why PINK for October?

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Incase you are wondering why my website is now PINK it is to mark the month of October which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As some of you might know my mother went into the hospital about September 17. A few days later they in formed her that she had ovarian cancer. On Friday September 21, they operated and took out all the girl parts as my father said, along with some small intestine and bowel that had ovarian cancer on it. She’s doing much better now. Since, I’m here and she is they are had not been able to talk to her until today. She sounded really good and is waiting for them to chemo while she’s still at the hospital.

I know this is not the same type of cancer, but if I can help in anyway toget onemore person to be aware of this I am glad I could help. I would not ahve known about this it was not for the Twitter of Patrick Haney a friend from Boston, who by the way is not a sausage.

Pink For October was started last year by the one and only (that I know of) Matthew Oliphant as a way to promote and educate people about National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This will be the second year in a now yearly tradition after quite a bit of participation in 2006.

How Can I Participate?

You can show your support in a number of different ways, it’s up to you

  • Make your website/blog pink for the month of October and link back to Pink For October’s website
  • Donate money to breast cancer research
  • Add Pink For October badges to your site
  • Educate yourself about breast cancer facts and share those facts with other people to spread the word

Or any combination of the above.
